Switch HPE 5406R argintiu

The HPE 5406R Silver (part of the HP 5400R zl2 Switch Series) is a modular campus access switch designed for high-performance wired and wireless aggregation. It provides Smart Rate multi‑gigabit ports, high switching capacity and a 2 Tbps crossbar fabric based on the 6th generation HP Networking ASIC to support dense 802.11ac deployments, converged services and demanding enterprise traffic without add‑on software licensing.

Advantages

This chassis-based switch family delivers enterprise-class resiliency, flexible scalability and high port density with options for 40 GbE and up to 96 line‑rate 10 GbE ports. The platform includes wire‑speed policy enforcement, hitless failover, comprehensive Layer 2 and Layer 3 feature set (IPv6, BGP, OSPF, policy-based routing), and full PoE+ support up to 288 ports depending on configuration. It is SDN ready (OpenFlow 1.3), offers license‑free advanced features, and includes redundant management and power options as well as hot‑swappable modules for high availability.

Suitable for

• Campus access and distribution layers in enterprise networks
• High‑density Wi‑Fi aggregation for 802.11ac/802.11ax APs
• Converged voice, video and data environments (unified communications)
• Data center top‑of‑rack for medium deployments requiring multi‑gigabit uplinks

How to use

Install the HPE 5406R Silver in a standard equipment rack using the chassis mounting brackets. Populate the chassis with desired line cards and power modules according to required port density and PoE budget. Connect uplinks and access devices using SFP+/10GBASE‑T and multi‑gigabit ports as needed. Configure stack or chassis-level management, enable required routing protocols (BGP, OSPF) and QoS policies, and set up authentication (802.1X, MAC/Web) and security features. For SDN deployments, enable OpenFlow 1.3 and integrate with an SDN controller. Use HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC) or the device CLI for ongoing configuration, monitoring and software updates.

Recommendations

Choose line cards and power modules that match your expected PoE and bandwidth requirements; enable redundant power and management for environments that require high availability. Use IMC or RMON/sFlow for continuous monitoring and deploy authentication and DDoS protection features at the edge to maintain policy compliance and defend IPv6 traffic.
