How to Choose the Right Chainsaw
Power Source
Battery chainsaws (40 V / 54 V) offer cord-free convenience for garden and light felling work; corded electric models deliver consistent power for sustained workshop use.
Bar Length
35 cm bars suit pruning and small logs; 40–50 cm bars handle medium timber; match bar length to the diameter of wood you cut most often.
Chain Speed & Oil Tank
Higher chain speed (m/s) means faster, cleaner cuts. A larger oil tank capacity reduces refill stops on long jobs — important for professional or forestry use.
Weight & Ergonomics
Lighter saws reduce fatigue on overhead cuts or extended sessions. Compare weight specs when selecting between similarly powered models.

Safety tip: Always wear cut-resistant gloves, protective trousers, eye protection and a helmet when operating a chainsaw. Check chain tension and oil level before each use.
Chainsaw Buying FAQs
What bar length do I need for garden use?
For most garden pruning and firewood cutting, a 35–40 cm bar is sufficient. Larger bar lengths (45–50 cm) are better suited to felling medium-sized trees or professional work.
Are battery chainsaws as powerful as corded models?
Modern 40 V and 54 V battery chainsaws from Makita and DEWALT match or exceed many corded models in cutting speed, while adding the freedom of no power cable. Battery runtime depends on cut size and wood density.
How often should I sharpen the chain?
Sharpen the chain every 2–3 hours of active cutting, or immediately if the saw starts to pull to one side or produces fine dust instead of chips. A sharp chain is both more efficient and safer.
What oil should I use for chain lubrication?
Use a dedicated bar-and-chain oil, which is formulated to cling to the moving chain. Never substitute with engine oil or vegetable oil for prolonged use as they lack the correct viscosity and adhesion properties.
